Abstract:

NEW MATERIAL: (s)-(+)-1-bromo-3-chloro-2-methylpropane.

USE: A compd. for synthesizing a side chain of (R,R,R)-α-tocopherol.

PREPARATION: (R)-(+)-β-chloro-isobutyric acid represented by formula II is reduced by hydrogen boride or its deriv. to form (2R)-(-)-3- chloro-2-methylpropanol represented by formula III and this compd. is brominated by PBr3 or triphenylphosphine and bromine in DMF or triphenylphosphine and CBr4 in methylene chloride to obtain the compd. represented by the formula I.
