Abstract:
NEW MATERIAL:A vitamin D derivative of formula (one of R and R' is H, and the other is OH).
EXAMPLE: 6(R)-6,19-Epidioxy-9,10-seco-cholesta-5(10),7-diene-1α,3β-diol.
USE: It has an activity similar to vitamin D, and useful as a medicine.
PROCESS: The corresponding vitamin D compound (e.g. 1α-hydroxyvitamin D3) is irradiated with a light source emitting visible light (e.g. a halogen lamp), in an organic solvent such as methanol in the presence of an organic dye such as eosine, introducing O2 or air to the reaction system. The reaction mixture thus obtained is treated by conventional means to obtain the compound of formula. The irradiation is pref. carried out until the vitamin D compound used as the raw material is completely consumed.
