PURPOSE: To provide novel compounds useful as stabilizers for organic polymers or textile fiber materials, particularly polyester fiber materials and suitable for use as sunscreens in cosmetic preparations.
CONSTITUTION: O-Hydroxyphenyl-s-triazines are represented by formula I (wherein R1 is H, hydroxyl or the like; R2 and R3 are each H, 1-15C alkoxy; and provided that the compounds contain at least two 1-15C alkoxy) and include, e.g. 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-4,6-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,3,5-triazine. These compounds can be obtained by reacting a salicylic compound of formula II [wherein X1 is a halogen or -OR4 (wherein R4 is 1-3C alkyl)] (e.g. methyl salicylate) with a benzamidine compound of formula III (wherein Hal1 is a halogen) (e.g. 4- methoxybenzamidine hydrochloride), usually in an inert solvent, preferably at 80-95°C, generally for 2-30 hours.
