To provide an occupant detection device and an occupant detection method capable of accurately detecting an occupant on a seat under wet condition.
The occupant detection device includes: a first electrode 34 disposed adjacent to one face of an insulator 32; a second electrode 36 disposed between the seat and the another face of the insulator in adjacent relation; an electric field generation portion 140 for generating an electric field; current detection portions (150, 160) for detecting currents flowing in the first electrode and the second electrode, respectively; a selection portion 110 for selecting a first detection mode for detecting the current in the state of applying the electric field to the first electrode and keeping the second electrode unconnected, or a second detection mode for detecting the current in the state of grounding the first electrode and applying the electric field to the second electrode; and a determination section 110 using a detection value detected by the second detection mode for correcting a detection value detected by the first detection mode to determine the condition of the occupant, based on the correction value.
