The operating mechanism for gear change of a manual transmission is provided with a movable gate member that is installed on a change lever and can move downwards in the direction of a shaft of the change lever by a specific operation and a fixed gate member 50 that is installed on a transmission case side and abuts against the movable gate member when the change lever is moved in a selected direction towards a reverse shift lane side to control the change lever moving into the reverse shift lane while guiding the movement of the change lever inside a traveling shift lane in front of the reverse shift lane by being abutted against the movable gate member, and allowing the change lever move into the reverse shift lane when the movable gate member is moved downwards by avoiding abutment against the movable gate member. In such a case the movable gate member 52 is composed of a tubular member rotatable around a shaft center CL of the change lever 12.
