Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical amplifier for WDN(wavelength division multiplexing) and an optical communication system which secures the wavelength flatness of gain even for input light in a wide level range and can obtain a noise characteristic of less wavelength dependence.
SOLUTION: The fundamental constitution of the optical amplifier for WDN is provided with an optical amplification part 1 connected between an input port IN and an output port OUT, an input light monitor part 2 which measures the power of input light inputted to the input port IN, a variable gain equalizer 3 which is connected to the optical amplification part 1 and has a variable loss wavelength characteristic, and a gain equalization control part 4 which controls the loss wavelength characteristic of the variable gain equalizer 3 in accordance with the input light power measured by the input light monitor part 2. Thus, the variable gain equalizer 3 has the loss wavelength characteristic corresponding to the change of the gain wavelength characteristic of the optical amplification part 1, and the gain deviation of output light is compensated.
