To provide an optical device and a control method thereof, which ensure desired optical characteristics even when a heater deteriorates.
The optical device includes an optical element (10) the temperature of which is controlled by a temperature controller (20) and having an optical waveguide the refractive index of which is controlled by means of a heater (14), a detecting section (17) for measuring a current flowing through the heater (14) and/or a voltage being applied to the heater, and a control section (50) for maintaining the power being supplied to the heater (14) at a constant level based on the measurements from the detecting section (17). The control method of the optical device controls the temperature of the optical element (10) having an optical waveguide, the refractive index of which is varied by means of the heater (14), by means of the temperature controller (20), and controls the power being supplied to the heater so as to be maintained at a constant level based on a current flowing through the heater (14) and/or a voltage being applied to the heater.
