A fundus observation apparatus 1 divides low coherence light L0 into the signal light LS and reference light LR, generates and detects interference light LC from the signal light S through the eye E to be examined and the reference light LR through a reference mirror 174, and forms the tomographic image of the fundus Ef on the basis of the detected result. The fundus observation apparatus 1 is provided with a scanning unit 141 for scanning the signal light LS, an LCD 140 for presenting a fixation mark and an optical system. The fundus observation apparatus 1 acquires the image of the fundus Ef in the state of presenting the fixation mark while scanning the signal light LS and determines the propriety of fixation on the basis of the image. Thus, the fixation of the eye E to be examined is ensured and the eye E to be examined is prevented from following the track of the scanning of the signal light LS when acquiring the OCT images.
