Abstract:
PURPOSE:To provide the optical modulating element which has a large electrooptical constant, is extremely little in absorption of incident light, is, therefore, stable in operation and can suppress a light damage. CONSTITUTION:This optical modulating element has the electrooptical crystal material 11 and conductive films 14, 15 on the parallel surfaces facing each other of the electrooptical crystal material 11. The electrooptical crystal material 11 of this element consists of the crystal of an inorg. oxide having the structure which contain the M-oxygen tetrahedron coordinated with 4 pieces of oxygen with respect to an element M and in which the M-oxygen tetrahedron is oriented in one direction. The element M consists of an element Ma and an element Mb. The element Ma is at least one kind selected from a group consisting of group Ia, group Ib, group IIa, and group IIb. The element Mb is at least one kind selected from a group consisting of group Va, group Vb and group IVb.
