PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable the retrieval of recorded data information to be performed with high accuracy at a high speed and the reproduction to be performed with a high BER.
SOLUTION: Signal light 5 of P polarized light holding the first data information is recorded as a first hologram on the optical recording medium 10 by reference light 6 of the P polarized light. Next, signal light 5 of P polarized light holding the second data information in the state of subjecting the first data information to an encoding processing is recorded as a second hologram by the reference light 6 of S polarized light in the region of the optical recording medium 10 where the first hologram is recorded. This region is irradiated with the signal light 5 of the P polarized light holding the retrieval data information at the retrieval. At this time, the P polarized light component indicating the correlation between the first data information and the retrieval data information and the S polarized light component indicating the correlation between the second data information and the retrieval data information are simultaneously obtained as diffracted light 7 on the optical path of the reference light 6. The P polarized light component 7P in this diffracted light 7 is detected by a photodetector 43. The region described above is irradiated with the reference light 6 of the P polarized light at the reproduction.
