Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide an adapter device which couples different kinds of optical waveguides to each other and a process for producing such adapter device.
CONSTITUTION: The adapter device consists of the optical waveguides 5, 9 formed on a glass substrate 1 by an ion exchange technique and the electric field distribution of light in the basic mode of these optical waveguides changes adiabatically from the basic mode electric field distribution of the optical waveguide 5 formed by a K-Na ion exchange in the longitudinal direction of the optical waveguides to the basic mode electric field distribution of the optical waveguide 9 formed by an Ag-Na ion exchange.
