To obtain the subject new compound that is useful as a polymerization initiator for vinyl monomers.
This compound is represented by formula I (R1 is a 1-2C alkylene; R2 is H, methyl; R3 is ethylene, acetylene, phenylene; n is 1-30), typically a substituted benzyl peroxysuccinate bearing recurring units. The compound of formula I is prepared by subjecting the acid chloride of a substituted benzylsuccinic acid of formula II, for example, chlorobenzylsuccinic acid chloride, and an alkyl dihydroperoxide bearing divalent hydroperoxy group in the molecule of formula III, for example, 2,5-dimetyl-2,5-dihydroperoxyhexane to dehydrochlorinative peroxyesterification reaction in the presence of a basic compound at -10 to +40°C. The resultant organic peroxide can improve the polymerization efficiency, gives polymers of high molecular weight and can reduce the monomers remaining in polymers.
