PURPOSE: To perform an invariably stable rubbing process and improve the manufacture yield by evaluating the uniformity of the birefringent phase difference of an orienting film and the strength of the rubbing process with measurement light which has a large spot diameter and precisely measuring the surface of the orienting film with measurement light which has a small spot diameter.
CONSTITUTION: The orienting film is rubbed in the direction wherein the twist angle of liquid crystal molecules becomes 240° by adjusting the rotating speed of rubbing cloth 6 accompanying the rotation of a rubbing roller 5 and the moving speed of transparent electrode substrates 1. The birefringent phase difference measuring means 3 of a 1st chamber measures the birefringent phase difference of each transparent substrate 1 before the rubbing with the 2mm spot diameter and the birefringent phase difference measuring means 4 of a 2nd chamber measures the birefringent phase difference after the rubbing with the 2mm spot diameter; and the uniformity and strength of the rubbing process are evaluated with the difference between the both. Then the birefringent phase difference before and after the rubbing are measured with the 0.2mm spot diameter, and it is decided on the basis of the difference between the both whether or not a flaw is generated to control rubbing process conditions.
