A retardation plate 119 is disposed on the light emission side of a first polarizing plate 101, and has birefringence characteristics of 0-10 nm in-plane retardation and 0-35 nm retardation in a thickness direction. A retardation plate 117 and a retardation plate 118 are disposed on the light incidence side of a second polarizing plate 105. The retardation plate 117 has birefringence characteristics of 0-15 nm in-plane retardation and 50-123 nm retardation in the thickness direction, and further has a positive uniaxial optical characteristic, and is disposed in such a way that the optic axis is vertical to a polarizing layer surface. The retardation plate 118 has birefringence of 35-245 nm in-plane retardation, and is disposed in such a way that the optic axis with a larger refractive index out of the in-plane optic axes with the corresponding birefringence characteristics perpendicularly intersect a light absorption axis of the first polarization layer.
