Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain an additive having extremely improved drainage, paper strength sizing degree and filler yield, by adding a specific ampholytic polymer containing an amidine unit to a filler slurry.
CONSTITUTION: This additive comprises a water-soluble polymer composed of (A) 20-90mol% (preferably 40-80mol%) of a repeating unit of formula I (R1 and R2 are each H or methyl; X- is an anion), (B) 0-40mol% of a repeating unit of formula II (R3 is a 1-4C alkyl) and (C) 0-70mol% of a repeating unit of formula III and having 0.1-10dl/g reduced viscosity measured as 0.1g/dl solution in 1N solution of salt at 25°C and is added to a paper raw material slurry. The additive is preferably obtained by hydrolyzing a copolymer composed of N-vinylformamide, acrylonitrile and acrylic acid with an acid.
