To provide a parking assisting device and a parking assisting method capable of allowing an occupant to intuitively perform the operation of designating the position and the direction of a target parking space.
When displaying a downward view image on a display screen, a frame pattern F of a size corresponding to a contour of a vehicle is displayed at a predetermined reference position on the display screen in a superposing manner in a downward view in the predetermined direction; the display position and the display direction of the frame pattern F are changed according to the operation by an occupant of a vehicle; and a target parking space forming a target of parking the vehicle is specified based on the display position and the display direction of the frame pattern F after the change.
