PURPOSE: To update a recognition dictionary without allowing a user to be aware of and without causing timewise waste, and to improve a recognition rate by utilizing the time when a recognizing part if stopping a recognition processing and executing learning of the recognition dictionary.
CONSTITUTION: The device is provided with a recognizing part 1 for executing recognition of an input pattern and learning of a recognition dictionary, a dictionary storage part 2 for storing the recognition dictionary, a display 3 and a keyboard 4, a characteristic kernel storage part 6, a learning intermediate state storage part 7, an error reject storage part 8, and a per-processing part 9. Also, this device is constituted so that a part or the whole of an arithmetic processing part contained in the recognizing part 1 for executing recognition of an input pattern is utilized as it is for learning of the recognition dictionary, and usually, the recognizing part 1 executes recognition of the input pattern, and the recognizing part 1 (the arithmetic processing part thereof) is allowed to execute learning of the recognition dictionary by utilizing a recognition processing stopping period except the time when the recognizing part 1 executes recognition of the input pattern.
