Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a new phenylbicyclohexane derivative useful as various liquid crystal display elements having wide temperature range of a liquid phase and requiring low voltage driving, especially a liquid crystal material for active matrix driving.
CONSTITUTION: A phenylbicyclohexane derivative expressed by formula I (R is a 1-12C alkyl; Y1 and Y are each H or F; Z is F, trifluoromethyl, trifluoromethoxy or difluoromethoxy; cyclohexane rings have trans configuration), e.g. trans-4-[2-(trans-4-propylcyclohexyl)ethyl]-trans-4'-(3,4-difluorophenyl) bicyclohexane. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting, e.g. a Wittig reacting agent of formula IIa with a cyclohexylcyclohexanone derivative of formula IIIa to afford an alkylidenebicyclohexane derivative of formula IVa and hydrogenating the derivative. The compound of formula I can extremely readily be synthesized in an industrial scale and is chemically stable to heat, light, water, etc.
