Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photocatalyst which exhibits a high catalytic function in the visible light region. SOLUTION: The photocatalyst comprises a perovskite-type oxide in which a cation C having a valence lower than that of B ion is doped in the range up to 50 mol % and which is expressed by general formula: A<2+> B<4+> 1- XC<3+> XO3- δ, wherein X is >0 and <=0.5; δ is >0 and <0.5; A is at least one element selected from alkaline earth metal elements; B is at least one element selected from lanthanide and elements of groups IVa and IVb; and C is at least one element selected from lanthanide and elements of groups IIIa and IIIb. Though the energy band gap of the perovskite-type oxide is kept constant and similar to that of the perovskite-type oxide before being doped with the cation C, the wavelength region of light, where the oxide acts as the photocatalyst, is controlled by utilizing the acceptor level formed by doping the cation C and the impurity level caused by the external atmosphere, which is accelerated by generated by doping the cation C. Thereby, it becomes possible to allow the catalyst to effectively exhibit catalytic activities in the visible light region.
