To obtain an agent containing a water soluble polysaccharide produced by a filamentous fungus belonging to the genus Pestalotiopsis or Pestalotia and used as a blood sugar reducing agent, a suppressing agent for blood sugar elevation and a blood cholesterol reducing agent.
This physiologically active agent contains a water soluble polysaccharide contained in a cultured medium obtained by culturing a filamentous fungus belonging to the genus Pestalotiopsis or Pestalotia, e.g. Pestalotiopsis sp KGM96004. The water soluble polysacchairde is blended preferably as a form of a crude material or a purified material. In order to prepare the purified material, a four step process are performed by mixing the cultured medium of the filamentous fungus with a polar organic solvent to obtain a precipitated material, mixing the precipitated material with water, performing a centrifugal separation to obtain the supernatant, adsorbing the supernatant with an anion exchanger, collecting an eluting fraction by flowing a buffer solution therethrough, forming a dried material by concentrating and drying the fraction, dissolving the dried material with water, performing the centrifugal separation to separate and collect the supernatant, and concentrating.
