Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stabilize a tube current which flows through a discharge tube such as a cold- cathode tube and to enable a piezoelectric transformer itself to make a stable tube current flow through the discharge tube by specifying the quotient obtained by dividing the output voltage when a load resistor is nearly infinite in resistance by an output current obtained when a load resistor is nearly zero in resistance.
SOLUTION: With respect to the output characteristics of a piezoelectric transformer, a quotient obtained by dividing an output voltage when a load resistor is nearly infinite in resistance by an output current obtained when a load resistor is nearly zero in resistance is defined as the output impedance of the piezoelectric transformer. The output impedance of this piezoelectric transformer is set larger than roughly 1/3 the maximum impedance when an electric discharge takes piece in a discharge tube, by which the piezoelectric transformer has output characteristics to serve nearly as a constant current source, so that a tube current flowing through the discharge tube becomes stable. For instance, the maximum impedance of a cold-cathode tube is about 500 kΩ, so that the output impedance of the piezoelectric transformer is set about 1/3 the maximum impedance of the cold-cathode tube or above 150 kΩ, and the cold-cathode tube can be stably kept on without oscillating or running away.
