PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow stratified combustion and homogenous combustion to coxist at a high level while facilitating the assembly of a piston into a cylinder.
SOLUTION: A convex part 21 on the top surface of a piston 4 is composed of an exhaust valve side inclined surface 23 and an intake valve side inclined surface 22 which are in parallel with inclined surfaces of a pent roof type combustion chamber, and conical side surfaces 24, 25 concentric with the outer peripheral circle of the piston 4, and is formed therein with a substantially circular bowl 12. A piston reference horizontal surface 26 serving as a reference surface for the assembly of the piston is formed in the outer periphery of the convex part 21, having a predetermined witch L1 and extending over the entire periphery. A swirl component S1 in the outer peripheral part of the cylinder can flow above the piston reference horizontal surface 26 even at the top dead center of the piston, and is reserved at a high intensity.
