To achieve a plasma display panel which has high-definition and high-luminance display performance and low power consumption.
The invention relates to a plasma display device wherein one field is constituted of a plurality of subfields, and each subfield is provided with an address period for selecting a discharge cell for emitting light. A base film of a protective layer 9 of the PDP is formed at least of two or more metal oxides selected from magnesium oxide, calcium oxide, strontium oxide, and barium oxide and, in an X-ray diffraction analysis, a peak is present between a minimum diffraction angle and a maximum diffraction angle produced by a single body of the oxide constituting the metal oxide of a specific orientation plane. Of the time before the address period is started in each sub-field, the maximum value in one field is ≥200 μs.
