To achieve a plasma display panel which has high-definition and high-luminance display performance and low power consumption.
The invention relates to a plasma display device wherein one field is constituted of a plurality of subfields, and each subfield is provided with an address period for selecting a discharge cell for emitting light. A base film of a protective layer is formed at least of two or more metal oxides selected from magnesium oxide, calcium oxide, strontium oxide, and barium oxide and, in an X-ray diffraction analysis, a peak is present between a minimum diffraction angle and a maximum diffraction angle produced by a single body of the oxide constituting the metal oxide of a specific orientation plane. Further, in one field, the number of times of discharge of the first subfield is the smallest, and the number of times of discharge of the second subfield is larger than that of any one of the third and subsequent subfields.
