PURPOSE: To increase the active-material holding ability of a plate used for a lead storage battery by sticking two pieces of expanded metals together with pressure so as to make a grid, and packing the grid with an active material so as to make the said plate.

CONSTITUTION: After expanded metals are prepared from two pieces of metal sheets, the expanded metals are fixed together by pressure with their pitches shifted by about 1/2. Following that, a lug 6 and the like are formed by punching work so as to make a grid, and an active material 10 is packed into the grid. After that, the grid packed with the material 10 is dried and cut so as to make a unit plate 13. The plate 13 obtained by the means mentioned above has an increased active-material holding ability since grid bones 14 and 14' are arranged in zigzag form when seen from the section of the plate 13, and since the network is divided minutely. As a result, use of a thin paper can be omitted. Besides, a life of a lead storage battery is increased since any separation of the active material 10 is prevented.
