This pointing device includes a position detecting part having a plurality of first sensors each for outputting a signal in response to a distance to a target object, and for outputting a positional signal indicating a position of the target object with the plurality of first sensors, a proximity detecting part having a second sensor for outputting a signal in response to the distance to the target object, and for comparing the signal output from the second sensor with a determined threshold value to detect whether the target object is near or not, and a signal processing circuit for detecting a moving direction and a moving amount, based on a change of the positional signal output from the position detecting part, and for outputting the detected moving direction and moving amount, when detecting the proximity of the target object by the proximity detecting part.
