Title:
POLARIZED LIGHT ILLUMINATION DEVICE AND PROJECTION TYPE DISPLAY DEVICE
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3666505
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact polarized light illumination device having high light utilization efficiency by combining an integrator optical system and a polarized light converting optical system.
SOLUTION: The polarized light illumination device 1 comprises: a light source 2 for emitting light random in the polarizing direction; a 1st lens plate 3 constituted of a plurality of rectangular converging lenses each of which has a rectangular shape and capable of forming a plurality of secondary light source images by converging light projected from the light source; and a 2nd lens plate 4 arranged in the vicinity of a position on which a plurality of secondary light source images are formed and provided with a converging lens array, a polarized light separating prism array 420, a λ/2 phase difference plate 430, and an outgoing side lens 440. On a stage that fine secondary light source images are generated by the 1st lens plate 3 constituting the integrator optical system, polarized light is separated. Since the spatial expansion of an optical path due to the separation of polarized light can be suppressed, the polarized light illumination device can be made compact though the device is provided with the polarized light converting optical system.
