To obtain a novel diketopyrrolopyrrole which gives a polymer useful as a paint, a coating material or the like by reaction of a specific succinic diester with a nitrile in the presence of a strong base in an organic solvent followed by reaction of the product with a dicarbonate.
This compound is a novel 1,4-diketopyrrolopyrrole represented by formula I [R1 and R2 are each H, a 12-24C alkyl of a 6-24C alkyl whose chain is interrupted by O or S atoms once or more times, a group of formula II (R5 is a 4-18C alkyl, a 5-10C cycloalkyl); R3 is a polymerizable group; R4 is a 6-24C alkyl bonding through O, S to a benzene ring or a 6-24C alkyl whose chain is interrupted by O, or S, group of formula II, H, a halogen, phenyl or the like] and is useful as a raw material for producing a polymer for a paint, a coating material, ink and the like. This novel compound is prepared by reaction of a succinic diester with a nitrile of formula III or formula IV followed by reaction of the product, a diketopyrrolopyrrole, with a dicarbonate or a compound of the formula: R1-Hal (Hal is a halogen).
