To obtain a new polymethacrylic ester having, at the α- and ω- positions, ester groups other than those present in the main chain by conducting transesterification under specified conditions.
This polymethacrylic ester is represented by formula I (wherein each R1 is independently 1-8C alkyl, perfluoroalkyl, or dialkylaminoalkyl; R2 is derived from an alcohol: R2OH; n is 1-6; and a is on average 4 or higher) and is produced by the transesterification of 1mol of a polymethacrylic ester represented by formula II [wherein R1 and a are each the same as in formula I; and R* is a group derived from a known chain-adjusting agent of an R*OC (O)-(CH2)n-SH type and is 1-16C alkyl or alkaryl] and 1-5mol of an alcohol: R2OH at 70-150°C in the absence or presence of a solvent and in the presence of a known nonbasic transesterification catalyst.
