Abstract:
PURPOSE: To narrow the relative arm distribution by bringing different arms in an asymmetric radial polymer sequentially in contact with a coupling agent, adding a polar compound, and then bringing the final arms in contact with a nonpolymerizable coupling agent.
CONSTITUTION: A subsequent polymer excluding a first polymer and a final polymer having one reactive terminal group and a nonpolymerizable coupling agent containing functional groups reactive with the reactive terminal group are brought in contact with each other in the presence of an organoalkali metal compound under a pressure of 1 to 8 bars at -150 to 300°C to complete the reaction between the polymer and the nonpolymerizable coupling agent to obtain the final polymer having one reactive terminal group. The obtained polymer and a conjugated olefin are polymerized in the presence of 10 to 1,000 ppm of a polar compound capable of changing the amount of a vinyl group to complete the reaction between the final polymer and the remaining reactive groups of the coupling agent.
