Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a carboxylate useful as a surfactant by allowing a specified primary hydroxyl group-contg. compd. to react with an inorg. or org. halo-contg. oxidizing agent in the presence of a base and hindered nitroxide.

CONSTITUTION: A primary hydroxyl group-contg. compd. selected from polyoxyalkylene siloxane, polyoxyalkylene amine, alkylpolyoxy alkylene, polyoxyalkylene block polymer alkyamide polyoxyalkylene and alkylpolyglucoside by 1 mole is allowed to react with a halo-contg. oxidizing agent, preferably hypochlorous acid, trichloro isocyanulic acid, etc., by at least the same mol. amt., particularly 3 to 4 mol in the presence of a weak base (in an amt. to render the pH of the reaction mixture to 8.0 to 9.0) and a catalytic amt. (preferably 0.02 to 0.04 mol.) of hindered nitroxide to obtain the corresponding carboxylate expressed by formula I or formula II. In formula I, R is alkylene; R' is alkyl, aryl, etc.; (n) is 0 to 100; (t) is 0 to 1,000; (p) is 1 to 100, and in formula II, (m) is 0 to 50; (n) and (p) are each 1 to 100.
