PURPOSE: To obtain selectively the compounds useful for solvents or the like by reacting carbon monoxide with nitrites in a continuous gas-phase using a platinum metal catalyst on a metal phosphate support and adding hydrogen halide during the course of the reaction to activate the catalyst, while suppressing side reaction.
CONSTITUTION: By filling platinum metal compound or non halogen-containing platinum metal compound on metal phosphate support having acid center in a reactor, adding hydrogen halide to the reactor to derive it into the form of halide or halide-containing complex and to activate it, adding hydrogen halide to the catalytic system under the conditions that the volume ratio of alkyl nitrites to carbon monoxide is from 0.1 to 10:1 under the pressure of 0.5 to 10 bar at the temperature of 50 to 150°C to react carbon monoxide with alkyl nitrite of the formula RONO (wherein R represents 1-4C alkyl) in the presence (absence) of inert substance and alcohol of the formula ROH, dialkyl carbonate of the formula is selectively obtd.
