To economically, industrially and advantageously prepare the subject compounds with a high catalyst activity and catalyst life by reacting an aromatic hydroxy compound with carbon monoxide and oxygen in the presence of a specific catalyst system at a specified temperature under a specific pressure.
(A) A compound represented by the formula ROH [R is a (substituted) 6-12C aryl such as a (substituted) phenyl] is reacted with (B) carbon monoxide and (C) oxygen in the presence of a quaternary salt, a base, a platinum metal catalyst, a cocatalyst and in additional presence of a heterogeneous promoter which is a compound represented by the formula AxByCz [A and B are each an element of group IIIA, IVA, VA, IIIB, IVB, VB, VIB or VIIB of the Periodic Table; C is an element of the 2nd period of the Periodic Table; (x) is 1-3; (y) is 0-3; (z) is 1-12] at 30-200°C, preferably 30-150°C, especially preferably 40-120°C temperature under 1-150 bar, preferably 2-50 bar, especially preferably 5-25 bar pressure to afford compounds represented by the formula RO-CO- OR.
