PURPOSE: To prepare the subject compound in a high yield by mixing the specific metal salt of the corresponding phenolic compound with dibromo (or bromochloro) difluoromethane in an aprotic polar solvent and subsequently reacting the mixed compounds with each other in the presence of a specific reaction initiator.
CONSTITUTION: When a compound of formula I (X1 and X2 are H, halogen or lower alkyl; Y is H or halogen) is reacted with dibromodifluoromethane or bromochlorodifluoromethane to prepare a compound of formula II (Z is Cl or Br) useful as an agricultural chemical, especially a compound of formula III having high insecticidal and acaricidal activities, a metal salt of formula IV (M is alkali metal or alkaline earth metal; (n) is 1 or 2) instead of the compound of formula I is reacted with the dibromodifluoromethane or bromochlorodifluoromethane in the presence of a metal alcoholate or metal hydride as a reaction initiator in an aprotic polar solvent to prepare the objective compound in a yield of ≥ approximately 70%.
