Abstract:

To economically prepare 3-chlorophthalic anhydride which is not based on a multistage synthesis.

3-Chlorophthalic anhydride and 4,5-dichlorophthalic anhydride are distilled from a starting mixture by the first distillation to provide the bottoms essentially free of the 4,5-dichlorophthalic anhydride. The resultant bottoms is then distilled to recover the 3-chlorophthalic anhydride. The starting substance is preferably prepared without a solvent in a melt by incomplete chlorination of phthalic anhydride using FeCl3 as a catalyst.
