Abstract:
PURPOSE: To prepare a ketene acetal from an inexpensive and relatively low reactive 2-chloroacetoaldehyde acetal without using expensive catalysts.
CONSTITUTION: This ketene acetal is obtained by dehydrohalogenation of a 2-haloaldehyde acetal. When the 2-haloaldehyde acetal is open chain, the dehydrohalogenation is carried out in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide or an alkaline earth metal hydroxide and a phase transfer catalyst and/or a sec. or tert. alcohol or a sec. or tert. diol. When the 2-haloaldehyde acetal is cyclic, the dehydrohalogenation is carried out under the reaction conditions mentioned above, or in the absence of the alcohol or the diol under the reaction conditions mentioned above, or in the presence of the alkali metal hydroxide or the alkaline earth metal hydroxide and a sec. or tert. diol. The ketene acetal prepared by the process serves as an intermediate in organic synthesis and is suitable as a monomer or a comonomer in free radical polymerization for the production of biodegradable plastics.
