PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound at a low temperature by bringing dihalo-tetrafluoro-p-xylene into contact with a reducing agent containing titanium.
CONSTITUTION: Dihalo-tetrafluoro-p-xylene is brought into contact with a reducing agent containing titanium of reducing state and the first organic solvent (preferably, ethers such as tetrahydrofuran and dioxide) at a temperature of 200°C or less, preferably 20-100°C to obtain octafluoro-[2,2]-paracyclophane shown by the formula. The reducing agent preferably contains at least one kind of ions of lithium, aluminum, and chloride: for instance, such as agent can be obtained by mixing the first mixture containing TiCl4 and tetrahydrofuran with the second mixture containing LiAlH4 and tetrahydrofuran under the effective conditions to obtain titanium having 0-3 valence condition. It is desirable to use a reducing agent of at least 3.0 moles per mole of raw chemical, especially 4-6 moles.
