PURPOSE: To easily obtain a compd. useful as a surfactant in a profitable and safe manner by allowing a tert. nitrogen base to react with an alkylene carbonate and sulfuric acid.
CONSTITUTION: A tert. nitrogen base of formula I (where each of R1 and R2 is a 1-22C alkyl, a 5-7C cycloalkyl, phenyl, naphthyl or a 7-12C aralkyl and R1 and R2 may form a ring), e.g. pyridine is allowed to react with an alkylene carbonate of formula II (where R3 is H or a 1-7C alkyl and R4 is H, a 1-20C alkyl, phenyl, etc.), and sulfuric acid at 80-220°C in a solvent such as toluene to obtain the objective sulfatobetaine of formula III. The nitrogen base and the alkylene carbonate are used in a molar ratio of 1:0.8 to 1:2 and the sulfuric acid is used by 1-2 mol per 1 mol of the alkylene carbonate. The product is useful as a detergent in the textile field and an electroplating auxiliary and easily gives a heterocyclic ethosulfate as a superior brightener for electroplating.
