PURPOSE: To profitably prepare a solution compound in a good yield without producing difficulty separable by-products by reacting an alkylthiophenol derivative with a dialkyl sulfate in the presence of a specific inorganic compound.
CONSTITUTION: An alkylthiophenol derivative of formula I (R is t-butyloxy, t-amyloxy, p-methoxybenzyloxy, etc.; R1 is lower alkyl; X is H, halogen or lower alkyl) is reacted with a dialkyl sulfate of formula: (R2)2SO4 (R2 is lower alkyl). The reaction is performed in the presence of an inorganic compound selected from alkali metal carbonates, alkali metal bicarbonates, alkaline earth metal hydroxides, alkaline earth metal carbonates and the group II metal oxides in a solvent (e.g. acetonitrile) or in the absence of the solvent at 30-80°C to provide the objective compound of formula II. The inorganic compound is used in an amount of 0.01-1 equivalent based on the dialkyl sulfate.
