To provide a process for treating fuel hydrocarbon oils containing undesired aromatic components, sulfur and nitrogen compounds.
A process for treating a charge hydrocarbon oil comprises using a catalytic weight amount of a sulfided metal catalyst comprising 0.1-15 wt.% at least one metal selected from iron, cobalt and nickel; 1-50 wt.% tungsten; and 1-20 wt.% at least one metal selected from molybdenum and chromium on a 'phosphorus treated carbon' support formed by (1) the heat treatment of active carbon and a phosphorus compound at 450°C or higher (2) to bind phosphorus to the carbon surface as polyphosphoric acid having peaks between -5 and -30 ppm in the solid state magic angle spinning 31PNMR and having (3) a BET surface area of 100-2,000 m2/g, a nitrogen content of at least 0.3 ml/g of the total pore volume and an average pore diameter of 12-100 (1.2-10 nm).
