To provide a process for producing a chemically modified filler.
It has now been discovered that an improved modified filler (for example, granular or amorphous inorganic oxide) can be prepared which is characterized such that a carbon content is higher than 1 wt.%; a mercapto content is higher than 0.15 wt.%; a silane conversion index is at least 0.3 (explained as below); and a standard strengthening index is more than 4(explained as below). The modified filler is generated by using a specific combination of a functionalizing agent and a hydrophobizing agent in an aqueous suspension of an inorganic oxide which has pH of ≤2.5 and by processing acid aqueous suspension of the modified filler with an acid neutralizer, then increases the pH of the suspension to the range of pH of 3.0 to 10.
