Abstract:

1,5-Disubstituted imidazoles of the formula are prepared by alkylation of an N-cyanoformamidine of the formula II X - NH - CH = N - CN (II) to give an N,N-disubstituted N-cyanoformamidine of the formula which cyclises by the action of a base to give a 4-aminoimidazole of the formula which is then reduced to the product of the formula I.
