PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for a pyrimidine ether derivative useful as a medicine and an agrochemical by reacting a 2-oxo-1-cycloalkanecarboxylic acid derivative with a metal hydrogen complex compound or a borane complex.
CONSTITUTION: A 2-oxo-1-cycloalkanecarboxylic acid derivative of formula I (R1 is H, halogen or a lower alkyl; R2 is H, alkali metal, ammonium or an organic ammonium; (n) is 0-2) is reacted with a metal hydrogen complex compound of the formula MBH(OAc)3 (M is alkali metal or a quaternary organic ammonium; Ac is acetyl) (e.g. sodium boron hydride) or a borane complex (e.g. tbutylamine-borane complex) in a solvent at -78°C) to the reflux temperature of the solvent to give a 2-hydroxy-1-cycloalkanecarboxylic acid derivative of formula II. Especially, a 2-hydroxycycloalkanecarboxylic acid derivative useful as a synthetic intermediate for a herbicide is efficiently obtained.
