To obtain the subject both compounds useful as raw materials for medicines, agrochemical agents, functional pigments, liquid crystals, sensitizers, etc., by reacting 2-indanone produced from a specific indanediol with water, with aniline and further hydrogenating as necessary
The method for producing 2-indanylidene-N-phenylamine of formula II is to heat an indanediol of formula I (R, R' are each independently H, formyl, acetyl or propionyl) with water in the presence of an acid to produce 2-indanone, collect the produced 2-indanone as a distillate with water, bring the distillate into direct contact with aniline for reacting the 2-indanone with aniline. And 2-phenylaminoindane is obtained by further reacting the above reaction product with hydrogen or a hydrogen donating compound in the presence of a heterogeneous hydrogenation catalyst.
