Abstract:

To obtain 4,6-dinitroresorcinol on an industrial scale in high yield at a low cost while suppressing the formation of by-product by reacting a dihalo-dinitrobenzene with a base in an aqueous solvent in the presence of a metal catalyst and acidifying the reaction product.

The objective compound is produced by reacting a 1,3- dichloro-4,6-dinitrobenzene (preferably 1,3-dxchloro-4,6-dinitrobenzene) with a base in an aqueous medium in the presence of a metal catalyst to effect the hydrolysis of the halogen group and acidifying the reaction product. The metal catalyst is preferably a metal of the group Ib, IIb or VIII of the periodic table or its compound (e.g. copper, copper oxide, copper hydroxide, copper carbonate or a copper salt). The base is preferably an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal or their compounds (e.g. hydroxide or oxide of an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal). The amount of the base is preferably 2-10 equivalent based on the substrate material and the hydrolysis temperature is preferably 50-150°C.
