PURPOSE: To obtain the aimed compound in high selectivity and conversion ratio, by using specific hydrogen type zeolite Y as a catalyst in reacting an aromatic hydrocarbon with an alkylating agent in the presence of an aluminosilicate catalyst to produce the titled compound.
CONSTITUTION: An aromatic hydrocarbon is reacted with an alkylating agent in the presence of an aluminosilicate catalyst to produce an alkylated aromatic hydrocarbon compound. In the process, hydrogen type zeolite Y, synthesized by using activated silicic acid or activated aluminosilicic acid prepared by acid treatment of a clay mineral and having an acidity of ≤-5.6 expressed in terms of Hammett's acid strength function within the range of 0.5W1.0meq/g as the above-mentioned catalyst. Furthermore, when the afore-mentioned reaction is carried out in the liquid phase and batch method, an inert gas is passed through a reaction vessel to suppress formation of condensates, e.g. binaphthyls, etc., and polyalkylated substances, etc., as by-products. Selectivity and conversion ratio to monoalkylated substances are increased to afford the aimed compound in high yield with excellent catalyst life.
