Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain an alkyldiaryl having excellent corrosion resistance and useful for thermal medium, solvent for pressure-sensitive paper, etc., in high efficiency and yield by reacting a specific diaryl compound with a specific olefin in the presence of a heteropolyacid (salt).

CONSTITUTION: The alkyldiaryl can be produced by reacting a diaryl compound of formula I (X is direct bond, O or S; R1 and R2 are H, methyl, ethyl or isopropyl) such as biphenyl with a 2-5C olefin such as ethylene in the presence of a heteropolyacid (salt of formula II (X is P or Si; Y is W, Mo or V; (a) is a number determined by the kinds of X and Y), e.g. Keggin-type heteropolyacid.
