Abstract:

PURPOSE: To produce arylacrylic acids and their esters from an arylamine in a high yield without first isolating a diazonium salt by using a low concn. palladium catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An arylamine of formula I (where Ar is an arom. group or a hetero arom. group) is converted into a diazonium salt preferably with a stoichiometric amt. of nitrous acid in an aq. medium. The diazonium salt is then allowed to react with an olefinic matrix of formula II [where Z is R2 or CH2COOR3; and R1 to R3 are each H or CnH2n+1 (0≤n≤20)] in the aq. medium in the presence of a palladium catalyst and a carboxylic acid of formula III (where R4 is H, Cl, CH3, or C2H5) preferably at 0-30°C to obtain the objective arylacrylic acids and their salts. Excess nitrous acid is preferably removed by adding a nitrous acid scavenger such as a prim. amine or amide after the formation of the diazonium salt and before the addition of the catalyst.
