Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for a β-lactam antibiotic substance having carbapenam or carbapenem skeleton.
CONSTITUTION: An azetidinone derivative of formula I [R1 is H, (substituted) alkyl or (substituted)amino; R2 is carboxy-protecting group; R3 is (substituted)ary1; X is (substituted)alkylene], e.g. (3S,4R)-3-[(R)-1-hydroxyethyl]-4-[(R)-3- phenylmethoxycarbonyl-1-methyl-2-oxo-3-phenyliodoniopropyl]-azetidin-2-one. The compound of formula I can be produced by reacting a compound of formula II with a compound of the formula R3-I(Q)2 (Q is substituent originated from the anion of an acid). AΔ-lactam compound of formula III is produced by cyclizing the compound of formula I preferably using a rhodium salt as a catalyst.
