PRODUCTION OF CIS-OLEFIN

PURPOSE: To selectively and readily produce a cis-olefin useful as an intermediate for various fine chemicals under a mild reaction condition in a high yield by reducing an alkine with formic acid in the presence of a palladium catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An alkine (e.g. 2-undecyne) of formula I [R1, R2 are H, ester, substituted silyl, carboxyl, cyano, (substituted)1-20C aliphatic hydrocarbon, (substituted)phenyl] is reduced with formic acid in the presence of a palladium catalyst to give a cis-olefin of formula II (e.g. 2-undedecene). A compound selected from an amine, a phosphine and a phosphite is preferably added to the reaction system. The method is advantageous because of substantially no production of a trans-olefin and saturated compounds.
